GADOL

Avia's Family Story

During the Covid-19 pandemic Avia's family played CATAN endlessly – a famous game which challenges the players to trade, settle and build houses along different terrains which produce resources. While opening boxes filled with photos and stories of her family roots, Avia discovered the themes of BUILDING, EDUCATING, MOVING, REMEMBERING. These themes form her Jewish heritage and the foundations for her future. CATAN is an imaginary island sounding like the Hebrew word “Katan” meaning small. Her heritage island is “GADOL” meaning big in Hebrew. The centre of the game represents the Jewish people becoming a nation at Sinai. The resources and photos found on the game board represent her family members. The players can build roads, houses, synagogues and Jewish symbols.

Her mother’s family moved from Lithuania to South African and then to Canada. Her family learnt Torah in Lithuania, became educated in South Africa and were entrepreneurs in Canada. Her father’s family moved from Lithuania to South Africa. Her father’s uncle was a leader in Bnei Akiva and built a Moshav in Israel. GADOL presents the themes of the Jewish People to visitors young and old in a unique and interesting way. She placed her project in an eco-friendly moving box, because she believes that we need to preserve our planet in order to remember and continue our Jewish legacy.

הזוית האישית

Avia Shari Nossel participated in My Family Story 2022. My Family Story is an experiential and fun Jewish heritage program that involves Jewish youth from 30 countries around the globe. Students research their roots, conduct family interviews and use their creative skills to design original, artistic installations that capture the essence of their family history. Top entries are selected for display in an international exhibition in Memory of Manuel Hirsch Grosskopf, displayed at ANU – Museum of the Jewish People.

Catan
Catan, previously known as The Settlers of Catan or simply Settlers, is a multiplayer board game designed by Klaus Teuber. It was first published in 1995 in Germany by Franckh-Kosmos Verlag (Kosmos) as Die Siedler von Catan. Players take on the roles of settlers, each attempting to build and develop holdings while trading and acquiring resources. Players gain victory points as their settlements grow; the first to reach a set number of victory points, typically 10, wins. The game and its many expansions are also published by Catan Studio, Filosofia, GP, Inc., 999 Games, Κάισσα (Káissa), and Devir.
