Kaparot
Money For Redemption
.The Slice of Jewish Life
I was born after the war (WW2). My parents came from observant background but post Holocaust were not observant. I was raised in a Reform congregation (the largest in Rio at the time).
I always remember that every year on the dawn of Yom Kippur, my Father and Brother would do 'seder kaparot'. This is done with either a chicken or money, turned three times around our head. We used money.
This procedure stayed with me and I still do it every year despite no longer being observan continue to do it, even though I haven't taught it on to my children.
