Finding the Afikomen
The first time that Roger felt a sense of his Jewish identity was when he was studying for his Bar Mitzvah in Hebrew school in 1943. Roger went to a little synagogue called Beth Joseph. Roger recalls his grandmother (Rose or Rachel) lighting Shabbat candles.
Roger also remembers celebrating Passover with his whole family. His family was all from Chicago. His father's brothers and their families came. However, Roger's mother's family celebrated Passover with his mother's parents. Passover was celebrated at Roger's house in Chicago.
At age 6, Roger found the afikomen at the family seder, 1938
Favorite Jewish tradition: Roger goes to Shabbat morning minyan because he enjoys the morning service and enjoys the people there
